Turn the oven on to 350 degrees. Grease and dust the bottom of a 9 X 13 pan and set aside.
Add soda, hot water and chopped dates (purchased in a box) to soak in a small bowl for five minutes. If you do not like dates, this might scare you. You will not even know that they are there because it tastes chocolaty. You will be surprised to know that this is the secret to making it moist.
Cream the butter, sugar and eggs in a mixing bowl. Add the soaked-dates, flour, salt, vanilla and cocoa.
Add one-half of the semi-sweet chocolate chips to the cake mix. Pour into the pan. Put the remaining chips and nut pieces on top. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Enjoy your homemade chocolate chip cake.
